Go Go Jonah

[print friendly version]

The story of the prophet Jonah is one of the more contentious stories in the Bible: a man surviving three days inside a huge fish? Surely nothing but an amusing fairy tale, many would say. My response is simply to state the words of Luke 1:37: ‘With God nothing is impossible’

Controversy aside, what a remarkable and absorbing story, one loaded with strong messages of reassurance and encouragement for us all:

  • God is indeed in control (the creating and abating of the storm, the timely arrival of the fish), and yet he doesn’t control his people as mindless puppets but rather guides and directs them, allowing them(as Jonah did) to use their skills and personalities to achieve his purpose in the world.
  • God’s love lies behind all of his decisions and actions (his desire to save the people of Nineveh from the destructive path they were following,).
  • God is patient, ignoring Jonah’s stubbornness and allowing him time and opportunity to change his mind about the mission He had for him.
  • God can and does perform miracles (the storm, the great fish, the change of heart of a whole city of people)

Have a look at yourself in a mirror. Are you a Jonah? Is God asking you to step out of your comfort zone to do something for Him, to help to spread His love and the good news of salvation to others? Do you ever turn or run the other way?

Jonah 1-4, Eph 2:10, Prov 19:21, Isaiah 41:10, 43:2, Psalm 86:15, 136:26, I Peter 2:9, Jer 29:11, 2 Peter 3:9, Psalm 86:15

Ready…Set…

Chorus

Go, Go Jonah, as fast as you can.

God’s got a job for you. You’re a part of His plan.

Go Go, Jonah, go to Nineveh town

to turn those crazy, crazy people around.

Let’s go!               Let’s go!

But Jonah didn’t want to go. No No No.

He didn’t wanna, didn’t wanna go, go, go.

He headed out to sea, the other way, way way.

“See ya later God some other day, day, day.”

Oh No!    Oh No!     Oh No!     Oh No!

Chorus

His ship hit a storm, the waves went crash, crash, crash.

Heavy rain and lightning, flash, flash, flash.

The crew was scared. Who could they blame, blame, blame?

Jonah was the one, they said. Shame, shame, shame.

Oh No!    Oh No!     Oh No!     Oh No!

They threw him in the water in the gale, gale, gale.

Next thing he’s in the tummy of a whale, whale whale.

For three days he’s stuck and thinking, “What, what what?”

I think I’ll give God another shot, shot shot.

Let’s go!    Let’s go!     Let’s go!    Let’s go!

Chorus

So Jonah did the trip like he was told, told, told.

He went to Nineveh and he was bold, bold, bold.

He warned all the people in that town, town, town.

They listened and their lives were turned around, ‘round, ‘round.

Hooray!     Hooray!    Hooray!     Hooray!

Ready…Set…

Go, Go Jonah, as fast as you can.

God’s got a job for you. You’re a part of His plan.

Go Go, Jonah, go to Nineveh town

to turn those crazy, crazy

turn those crazy, crazy

turn those crazy, crazy people around.

Let’s go!    Let’s go!     Let’s go!    Let’s go!
