Who’s the One?

[print friendly version]

In 2015 the principal of Loxton Lutheran school in the SA Riverland made a special request of me. His school had agreed to host The SA Lutheran Convention and he asked if I could lead a group of their students in performing a song for the general assembly there. With the key Bible text of the convention (Isaiah 44:3) along with the theme ‘the Holy Spirit’ mulling in my head I set about writing a special theme song. While the original quite acoustic song included lines that the students echoed following my lead, the recording went a different way, allowing some resounding lead guitar responses to replace the echoes and take the song to a new level.

The song echoes and connects the words of Isaiah who likened the Holy Spirit to a flooding river, refreshing and rejuvenating God’s people, to the words of Jesus himself, the Living Water, offering eternal nourishment to all who are thirsty.

Isaiah 44: 1-4, John 7:37-39, John 4:1-26 (esp v14), 1 Cor 12:13, Rev 22:1-2, Zechariah 14:8-9, Rev 21:6-7

Who’s the one who’s lives in me?

Who’s the one who sets me free?

Who’s the one who’s sends me out?

Who’s the one who makes me shout?

Flowing like water spreading wide,

A mighty river, a mighty tide,

A healing flow to give new life

To bring new growth on every side.

Flowing like a flooding river

bringing water to the sand,

Bringing life and bringing goodness

To the dry and thirsty land,

Jesus, God’s own living water.

Thirsty we will never be

If we drink his love and mercy

Here and in eternity.

When Jesus left to be with the Father

He gave His promise, He gave His word:

“ I will be with you forever!”

A greater promise has never been heard.

“ I will send my Holy Spirit to be your helper, be your guide”

Let the Spirit live within you. Spread the spirit far and wide.

Who’s the one who’s lives in me?

Who’s the one who sets me free?

Who’s the one who’s sends me out?

Who’s the one who makes me shout?
