This song had a long pregnancy. It was quite a few years ago when I first conceived the idea of a lively kids’ song incorporating the actions of Up Down Left Right. It took at least two years to make it come to life.
The song celebrates the joy, security and freedom that we have in the incredible love of God. No matter who we are or what we do God is waiting like a loving parent to take us into his safe and loving arms. The words of the song, as freeing as they are, cannot however be seen to give a follower of Jesus a license to live an irresponsible life, expecting God’s forgiveness while regularly flaunting God’s direction. As Paul makes clear in Romans 6, a life in God’s grace is a life seeking to live God’s way. The constant reassurance is that, when we fail to do so, God in his love will forgive us and help us to get back on track.
